Reminiscences of Golf on St. Andrews Links Author: Balfour, James Place: Edinburgh Publisher: David Douglas Date: 1887 Description: [6], 68 + [2, ads.] pp. 16.7x10.3 cm (6½x4"), original printed red wrappers, rebacked with matching red paper, presented in custom cloth-covered clamshell box lettered in gilt on spine. First Edition. Signed by the author's son on the half-title page with the following inscription "With compliments of the author's son, Leslie Balfour-Melville". The Balfours were a well-known golfing family, the most skillful of whom was James' son, Leslie Balfour-Melville, who won the British Amateur in 1895. Some have called Leslie Balfour-Melville Scotland's greatest athlete. In addition to his championship at St. Andrews, he was on the Scottish national teams for rugby, cricket, and lawn tennis as well. "One of the rarest of all golf items" - Murdoch 30; D&M 600; D&J B2890. Lot Amendments Condition: Some soiling to wrappers with light edge and corner wear, small repaired tear at fore-edge; leaves mildly toned else fine internally; about near fine overall.
