The Balfours were a well-known golfing family, the most skillful of whom was James' son, Leslie Balfour-Melville, who won the British Amateur in 1895. Some have called Leslie Balfour-Melville Scotland's greatest athlete. In addition to his championship at St. Andrews, he was on the Scottish national teams for rugby, cricket, and lawn tennis as well.
