[Porto Ronco near Ascona, before 1960] This romantic novel dedicated by the author to his wife the actress Paulette Goddard, was subsequently published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch under the title Der Himmel kennt keine Günstlinge , Köln, Berlin 1961, followed by various paperback editions. An edition in English was published at the same time entitled Heaven has no Favorites . The text of this typescript shows only a few minor variants from the printed version. For instance, the first paragraph here on the last page (p.349) ends "Lillian winkte ihm nach. Sie hatte nicht über Clerfayt gesprochen". This sentence has been omitted from the printed work. Another instance is the beginning of chapter xvii (typescript p.269 line 2) "Die Verkäuferin lächelte", printed version p.272 "Die Verkäuferin by Balenciaga lächelte". Remarque, became famous as the author of perhaps the most renowned anti-war novel ever written Im Westen nichts Neues , published in 1929, and in translation as All Quiet on the Western Front . This was publicly burnt by the Nazis in Berlin in 1933 and the author became persona non grata in Germany. In 1939 he emigrated to California, mainly writing filmscripts in Hollywood. He returned to Europe in 1948, to live near Ascona in Switzerland. It was while living there that he wrote the present novel. The dedication inscription is addressed to his close friend Alvise Barozzi. After his death the original manuscript was presented with his other literary papers by his wife Paulette Goddard to the Fales Library at New York University.
