(12¼x9½"), modern calf-backed marbled boards, spine ruled in gilt, morocco lettering piece. First Edition. The opening salvo in the famed "Dixon-Meares Controversy," being the first of a trilogy of rare publications concerning the difference of opinion between George Dixon and John Meares (the other two being: John Meares “An Answer to Mr. George Dixon…,” 1791; and George Dixon “Further Remarks on the Voyage of John Meares…,” 1791), referred to by modern historians as the “Dixon-Meares controversy.” In this work, Dixon scrutinizes Meares’ geographical work in the Pacific Northwest and points out inconsistencies in his statements. Sabin 20361. Lot Amendments Condition: A little edge wear to the untrimmed page edges, with a few neat repairs; E1 (pp. 17-18) with neat 4” closed tear in lower margin well away from text; basically fine, a lovely, untrimmed, wide-margined copy.
