William Turner (d. 1568), divine, physician and botanist, became intimate with Gesner and others when travelling abroad in Henry VIII's reign; returning to England on the accession of Edward VI, he became chaplain and physician to the Duke of Somerset, M.P., prebendary of York, and Dean of Wells in 1550. He is known as the author of The Herbal (1551) which marks the start of scientific botany in England. He was suspended for nonconformity, 1564, and his religious controversial works forbidden to be read in England in English. The above translation was his first published work.
