Title: Recollections of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Drawn with Pen and Ink by Richard H. Horne. Melbourne. Octr. 16th, 1856 - lithograph broadside and two original watercolor sketches Author: Horne, Richard Henry Place: Melbourne Publisher: Date: 1856 Description: Lithograph broadside, 37.5x55.5 cm (14¾x21¾"). Accompanied by two original watercolor sketches, approximately 11.5x17 cm (4½x6¾"). Richard Henry Horne (1802-1864) was an English poet and critic, most famous for his poem “Orion." The individual vignettes are titled "Military Drawings" and are from pen and inks of various "Landscape Studies" and Local Characteristics. Also included are two pen and ink sketches with watercolor of the Lieutenant Governor of Sandhurst, Col. James Butler who served in that capacity from 1811-1829, while Horne was a student there. One is initialed and titled, with the ink caption “Lieut. Colonel Butler, Lieutenant Governor of the Royal Military Coll. Always known as “Old Jem”. Apparently Horne was only there for a year or so and was asked to leave, and it is noted that he caricatured the headmaster, and took part in a rebellion. Possibly these watercolors may be those caricatures or sketches made. After leaving Sandhurst, Horne left for Mexico, joined the Navy and served in the war against Spain. In 1836 he returned to England and became a journalist, before moving to Australia in 1852 until he returned to England in 1869. A fascinating life ensued, where he was a friend of Dickens and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. See Blainey. ”The Farthing Poet: A biography of Richard Henry Horne, London 1963. OCLC locates no copies of this broadside. Lot Amendments Condition: The large broadside has been folded in quarters and has a 4”+ separation at one fold, with some edgewear, light staining and soiling; very good. Item number: 270948
