(Rear-Admiral Sir John).- Baxter (Richard) A Saint or a Brute, first edition, 2 parts in one, woodcut decorations and initials, some browing and other minor marking, contemporary & later ownership autographs and inscriptions on fly-leaves, front fly-leaf pulling with slight damage to inner margin, contemporary calf, lacking clasps, worn and generally rubbed, splitting at upper joint with loss to head of spine, [Wing B1382], small 4to, R.W. for Francis Tyton, 1662. Provenance: Sir John Narbrough's copy with three examples of his signature on the front fly-leaf. Narbrough (c.1640-88), naval officer, served in the Navy with distinction over a long career; in 1676 (when the signatures here are dated) he was maintaining a blockade around the port of Tripoli against north African corsairs, winning two major engagements at sea. He died and was buried at sea in 1688, but his bowels were brought back to Knowlton and buried there.
