American, early 20th century. An Etruscan-style match safe, propelling pencil and pen knife set by Marcus & Co. in 14K gold and enamel, set with emerald cabochons from the Muzo Mine near Bogota, Colombia. Match safe dated December 4, 1913 and marked on interior rim. Pen knife and pencil monogrammed PAV and dated Xmas 1908, and marked on rings. Pencil marked 14K on interior; match safe ht. 2 3/8, wd. 1 3/4 in., pen knife lg. 3 1/8 in. (closed), pencil lg. 2 7/8 in. (closed). Herman Marcus was one of the finest American jewelers of the Art Nouveau period. A former employee of Charles Tiffany, he established Marcus & Co. in New York in 1892. The firm produced jewelry and cufflinks in both gold and platinum, decorated with gemstones and enamel. Marcus & Co. was a leading importer of emeralds during the period in which these pieces were made.
