Rare Chinese Red Lacquer Covered Box and Stand Qianlong Period The plum blossom form cover carved with scholars and attendants amid overhanging trees and rockwork within a landscape, the attendants carrying a basket of lingzhi and a double-gourd flask, all within diaper and squared scroll borders, the sides each with panels of 'antiques', the stand raised on five cabriole legs between a shaped apron, the top with incised peony sprays on leafy stems, the interior with a fitted polychrome lacquer two-tier covered box, with similar blossoming floral sprays within a squared scroll border, the interior top lifting to a tray with conforming design within a 'cracked ice' border, the base tier with six fitted boxes with red bats and scrolling foliage on the covers in ochre, green and red and a red diaper pattern on the sides. Height 6 1/2 inches, width 7 1/2 inches.
Red lacquer cover: 1/2 inch and 1/8 inch long areas of restoration to lower rim and some cracks to lower rim. Some minute nicks to some edges and a minute nick on the key fret border on top. Stand: some shallow chips to lacquer on the raised rim around the top, 1/8, 5/8 and 1/2 inches and a small 1/2 inch area of restoration. 2 inch crack in the top near the edge. Some chips and cracks to lacquer on the feet. 1/2 inch restored area to the edge of the apron near the top of one leg and a small chip and touch ups to the lower edge of the apron. Interior box, tray and small boxes: minute chips to lacquer on the he edge of the interior rim of the top and lower tiers. The polychrome lacquer is dry and the green is powdery with some flaking. This is also so on the red areas on the top of the cover and tray although to a lesser extent. A few small chips to the tray edge. One cover of a fan shaped box has a restored lower corner another has a few minute edge chips. The cover to the small circular box may be a replacement, lacquer has some cracks.
