wonderfully composed half plate image of a brick church building with scaffolding surrounding a nearly completed steeple. According to the information supplied by the consignor, this is the Buffalo Presbyterian Church in Putnam County, West Virginia which was completed sometime between 1857 and '58, and the image was taken by William Pitrat. This image was recently exhibited at the Sunrise Museum in Charleston. An exceptionally early image of West Virginia (although at the time the image was taken, this was still Virginia, and a hotbed of southern sympathizers). Condition:In half case, solarized in upper corners of sky, VG.
