anonymous bust portrait of the future President of the United States revealing little more than his collar and his shoulder bars. Identified in pencil on verso. McKinley mustered into service as private in Company E of the 23rd Ohio in late June, 1861, and served the entire war. He was repeatedly promoted, receiving his brevet for Major in 1865. While McKinley will be best remembered as our 24th president who was assassinated at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, his fellow officers included another future President, Colonel Rutherford B. Hayes, and a future General, William S. Rosecrans. The 23rd was engaged in a number of Eastern Theatre conflicts, most notably at South Mountain, where its losses were a devastating 200 in number, of whom almost one quarter were killed. They headed off Morgan's men at Buffington's Island, and were engaged again at Winchester, where once again the regiment lost heavily, this time 153 men and 10 commissioned officers. While McKinley is undoubtedly the most photographed President of the 19th century, war-date images of him are exceptionally scarce. This is the second we have sold in 11 years. Condition: Image slightly light with light soil, VG-.
