RAOUL-ROCHETTE, Désiré (1789-1854). Peintures Antiques Inédites . Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1836. 4° (277 x 210mm). Half-title. Hand-coloured title-vignette, and 15 engraved and lithographic plates, 14 of these hand-coloured and one folding. (Light spotting, mostly in the tissue guards.) Contemporary russia, sides panelled in blind with a gilt foliate frame, marbled edges (spine lightly faded, minor wear). FIRST EDITION, THE HAND-COLOURED ISSUE of the author's work on the use of colour in the decoration of sacred and public buildings in antiquity. The work was also sold uncoloured; in coloured copies the number of coloured plates varies: in the Blackmer copy only 10 plates were coloured. Blackmer 1391 ('provoked a controversy in the French Royal Academy'); Brunet IV, 1106; Garcia y Garcia, Nova bibliotheca Pompeiana , 11545; Quérard VIII, 98-9.
