RAMPINELLI, Ramiro (1697-1759). Lectiones opticae. Brescia: Joannes Baptista Bossini, 1760.
RAMPINELLI, Ramiro (1697-1759). Lectiones opticae. Brescia: Joannes Baptista Bossini, 1760. 4º (270 x 185mm). Engraved title vignette by Domenico Cagnoni engraved headpiece and opening initial, 32 folding plates. (Lacks the portrait, half-title slightly soiled and with corner torn away, marginal waterstaining to plates and text, a few marginal tears, T3v with small stain.) Contemporary cartone alla rustica, manuscript title and shelf label on spine, uncut (lightly soiled). UNCUT COPY of a ‘bella edizione’ (Riccardi). A monk of the Olivetan order, Rampinelli was appointed to the chair of mathematics and physics at Pavia in 1747. He knew all the great Italian mathematicians of his time. His ‘unica innocente passione,’ laudatory words used by Giordano Riccati at his funeral, was of decisive influence on his circle. However, this posthumous first edition on optics was the only one of his works to be printed, and is rarely encountered. RBH records only two sales in 1980 and 1981. Riccardi I(ii) 541.
