Place: Boston Publisher: James French and Company Date: 1855 Description: 417 + [3] ad pp. Woodcut map. 7½x4½, original read blindstamped cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. Scarce work of some interest, written in journal form with letters interspersed, presenting a fresh, lively image of the mysterious East. Hill notes that "Ball writes about his residence and travels between 1848 and 1853. He also visited Java on his voyage to the Orient. On his return trip, he visited Kamchatka and Hawaii, and completed a voyage around the world. Hill 49. Lot Amendments Condition: Sine ends chipped and frayed (head more than foot), corners showing; ink name and bookseller's blindstamp to front free endpaper, light foxing to title and a few places within, very good, better than usually found.
