Railwayana - a brass steam locomotive chime whistle, inscribed 491 Passenger Loco Whistle Presented to Mr R H Woodhouse Hasland Driver 1917-1949, ... knop finial, octagonal wooden plinth, 33.5cm high overall. Midland Railway no.491 was a Derby-built Johnson superheated 4-4-0 locomotive of 1890s vintage, rebuilt by R. M. Deeley in 1911 as a 2P class, later (from 1948) British Railways no. 40491. Driver Woodhouse would have started his career with the Midland Railway as a locomotive cleaner, probably at 14 or 15, in c. 1898 and graduated to fireman in c. 1905/5, before becoming a driver in 1917 at approximately age 33. Her would have served 1923-1948 as a driver for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) into which the Midlabnd was absorbed, and retired under the auspices of the Nationalised undertaking.
