Autograph letter, signed ("Rich Wagner"), to Wilhelm Tappert, ABOUT THE RING
a chatty communication, written in purple ink, relating an occasion at which [Generalintendant Otto] von Hülsen expressed the wish to stage Die Walküre, which so enraged him that Liszt and Cosima had to intervene to tell him to desist from such impertinence, noting that he angrily remarked that if he wished to perform Die Walküre on its own half of the second act would have to be cut as it would be unintelligible, mentioning that [Hans von] Bronsart [Hannover Court Theatre Intendant] wanted to perform the whole of the Ring in Hannover, but that von Hülsen forbade this, decreeing that only works previously intended for Berlin could be accepted elsewhere for performance, further relaying another request made through [Karl] Eckert [Generalmusikdirektor of the Berlin Court Theatre] to perform Die Walküre next autumn, informing him additionally that Braunschweig and Schwerin have also acquired the rights to perform all four parts of the Ring, and closing by enquiring playfully of his correspondent, whom he calls 'a wicked fellow', how things are going

Wagner's plan with regard to performances of the Ring was to avoid separate performances of the individual works, something however he was unable to hinder. His correspondent here was the Berlin composer and writer on music Wilhelm Tappert (1830-1907), editor, between 1876 and 1880, of the Allgemeine deutsche Musikzeitung (hence the remark with which Wagner prefaces the letter: 'to be used as occasion offers' [trans.]).
