R.M.S. TITANIC 2ND EXTRA BAKER JOHN JAMES DAVIES John Davies served in the army prior to joining the White Star Line. He trained as a baker with The Royal Service Corps, joining April 30th 1907 and leaving 29th April 1910. His discharge states he was a young man of good character and ability. He then joined White Star Line as a civilian to gain experience as a baker with a view to opening a bakery with his wife after serving with the line. He served on board Olympic briefly and joined Titanic when he signed on in Belfast on the 1st April 1912. John Davies's body was recovered by the Mackay Bennett (#200) and was buried at sea. He was 27. Provenance by direct descent. Extremely rare canvas body effects bag with stencilled No 200, with original wax seal and official OHMS label reading "Titanic J.J. Davies Canvas Bag No 200". These canvas bags were used to send the smaller possessions of the bodies recovered, after the sinking. They are among the rarest of all Titanic memorabilia and this is the first one we have offered in nine years and only the third in the last 25 years. A letter from the White Star Line dated May 23rd 1912 accompanies the bag detailing the effects found, his Post Office book 3/6, some keys and his Stewards Union book. The bag and letter have remained in Mr Davies' family since they received them after the sinking. Also being sold is a copy of "Passage of Tears" by his granddaughter and a copy of a photograph showing Mr Davies alongside his colleague on Titanic, Chief Baker Charles Joughlin 14ins. x 10ins.
