R.E. Lee, Genl., (Robert E. Lee, CSA General and soon to be Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia), one page ALS, May 19, 1862 war-date military letter as General to 'Genl J.E. Johnston, Commd Army of N. Viga', letter headed 'Hd. Qrs. Richmond', 'I am directed by the President [Jefferson Davis] to say that in locating your troops in the neighborhood of Richmond, he requests that you will give strict orders that the residences, enclosures, gardens etc shall be strictly respected...the feelings of the people now thoroughly enlisted in the aid of the operations of the Army may be alienated from it...the President wishes you to confer upon him your future plans for that purpose and desires you to see him at his office.' , 8 x 10¼" on blue-lined stationery, light file folds which do not affect the signature, very fine and exceptionally choice, a rare R.E. Lee letter written while holding the title 'General in charge of Military Operations under the direction of the President', a post he held from March of 1862 to June 1, 1862. Ironically Gen. Johnston was wounded on May 31, 1862 and Lee was promoted to be Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. At that time McClellan was only seven miles from Richmond and the capital was expected to fall soon to Union forces. photo
