Quinta do Noval--Vintage 1931 Recently re-waxed. New labels. Levels into neck
1 bottle per lot
QUINTA DO NOVAL 1931 Lying in Twickenham, Middlesex (EHD) Quinta do Noval--Vintage 1931 Recently re-waxed. New labels. Levels into neck Tasting Note: This, of course, is the supreme '31. Some of the above Novals might have been made from the 10 of the vineyard planted, ungrafted, with the traditional Nacional grape variety. Usually, however, Nacional appears somewhere on the bin label, wax seal and/or cork. A typical Noval Nacional was served by Tawfiq Khoury at a dinner in San Diego in 1982. I noted its amazing high-toned bouquet which reminded me of eau de cologne, armagnac and a sort of ultra-refined liquorice. Although only medium-sweet, it was incredibly full-bodied, a rich, bitter sweet wine, spicy, of great length. Tasted in 1982 . Over 20 notes made over the past 40 years, all indubitably 1931, mainly UK bottled, all good, Justerini & Brooks' exquisite, very dependable, also excellent Scottish bottlings, seals embossed 'Sandeman & Co, Glasgow Vintage 1931', good fruit, great length. Outstandingly the best by Fearon, Block, Fearon, Routh tasted in 1985, 2003 and 2005, with embossed capsules and branded corks: still impressive, deep in colour, intense, good legs; glorious, scented, ethereal bouquet; still sweet, massive, high strength, complete and many years in hand. Most recently, and unusual, bottled at the Quinta in 1934: faultless, fragrant nose; sweet, rich, powerful, concentrated. Last tasted Aug 2005 ****** M.B. 1 bottle per lot
