in studio. The last of the three images. Having shed their uniform jackets the familiar Captain (seated 2nd on right) and jaunty 1st Lieutenant (standing far right) pose for a studio portrait with two more fresh faces. The Lieutenant is instantly recognizable by his pork-pie hat with hanging tassels as the officer far right in the camp scene. His Colt Army revolver is stuck into his belt. The rakish young Captain has donned a cravat for the occasion and now sports a fuller moustache than in the camp view suggesting a short interval of time between this photograph and the two half plates. The man seated second from left may be the sergeant to the right of the 1st Lt. in the panoramic view. This quarter plate is a superior example of group portraiture with an animated vista rarely captured in photography of the period. Housed in a black union case with a central patriotic motif of flags, shield and cannon. Condition:Plate is in EXC condition with crystal clarity.
