Lot of 3, including: Quarter plate tintype of a soldier standing at attention in front of a patriotic military backdrop. He leans on his sword and wears a pistol in his belt. The stripes of the flag are tinted red and the flag's stars and soldier's buttons, trim, and belt buckle tinted gold. Housed in a "Union & Constitution" Union case with four five-cent Washington revenue stamps under the plate. Sixth plate ruby ambrotype of a young soldier, with hand-tinted gold embellishments on his early war militia uniform. Housed in a pressed-paper case with a gem-sized tintype of what may be the same man, but aged. He is identified by a modern ink notation as possibly George W. Sherman (Mass. Calvary). There are two young George W. Sherman's who both enlisted at the age of 18. Although they shared the same name they were from very different backgrounds, one was a carpenter from Lawrence, while the other was a scholar from Lowell. George from Lawrence enlisted as a private on September 14, 1861. He mustered into 1st MA Cav. Co. H. He was wounded at Mavern Hill, VA in July but survived the war. He mustered out on June 26, 1865. George from Lowell enlisted on July 1, 1862 as a private. He mustered into 2nd MA Inf. Co. A on July 1, 1862. Unlike the first George, he did not survive the war. He was captured and died of disease at a POW camp in Savannah, GA on September 19, 1864. Condition: Small solar ring around George W. Sherman's ambrotype the tintype is in excellent condition.
