PYNE, WILLIAM HENRY The History of the Royal Residences of Windsor Castle, St. James's Palace, Carlton House, Kensington Palace, Hampton Court, Buckingham House, and Frogmore. London: A. Dry 1819 [plates watermarked 1811 to 1818]. 3 vols., large 4to, 407 x 318 mm. (16 1/16 x 12½ in.), slightly later diced russia gilt, g.e. by J. Mackenzie, rebacked and board edges renewed with brown morocco gilt, but corners bruised, quires O through S foxed in vol. 1 not affecting plates. LARGE PAPER, 100 colored aquatint plates by W.J. Bennett, D. Havell, R. Reeve, T. Sutherland and others after R. Cattermole, J. Stephanoff, W. Westall, C. Wild and others. Abbey Scenery 396 (ordinary paper); Ray England 42; Tooley 389. Large-paper copies exhibit superior handcoloring and the coloring of this set is of a particularly high standard. Additionally, this set contains 20 uncolored plates from the ordinary paper issue, before letters and with captions added in pencil.
