Collar 1" high, with oval 5.5 x 5.75" opening, having three pronged 8.5" spikes attached through openings in the strap. This Lot and the previous Lot (55) are both part of a collection of items relating to slavery consigned by the family of a Kentucky collector now deceased. As a consequence, little is known of the provenance of thse collars. A similar, though not identical collar, is illustrated in the famous cartes de visite of the Louisiana slave Wilson Chinn issued during the Civil War, and used to inflame Northern sensibilities. A remarkable artifact. Condition: Expected pitting and oxidization. Locking device frozen with rust and oxidation.
