Engraved map of Chiana valley on two Royal sheets joined, overall 520 x 877mm. Title and approbation set in decorated baroque cartouches, the arms of pope Alessandro VII (Fabio Chigi), compass rose, scalebars in decorated carotouches, engraved border to left and right, inset cross-section of a river profile from the Ponte di Valiano to the Ponte di Sotto, and views of two watertowers. (Trimmed to image, some very light discolouration, neat reinforcing on verso to two folds.) A rare hydrographical map of the Val di Chiana in Tuscany, showing the engineering works designed and built to manage the flooding of the Chiana. The Chiana was an important waterway, connecting the Arno to the Paglia, a tributary of the Tiber. These engineering works were the collective enterprise of pope Alessandro VII and of the then Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinando II. Watermark anchor in circle surmounted by star and letters.
