PTOLEMY (Claudius) : PRIMA EUROPE TABULA, Ulm, 1486 410 x 570mm, woodcut map of the British Isles, HAND-COLOURED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND, the seas coloured in heavy blue, additional country names in red manuscript, decorated with depictions of nine religious houses including London, Winchester, Canterbury and Stirling, also showing the cell of St.Patrick and the blessing of a proselyte in Northern Ireland,the pearl beds off the east coast of Scotland, and the tree fowl growing from trees on the Wales coastline, Latin text on verso without decorative border (several tears on lower margin, early repairs to centre fold, margins slightly soiled) A fine hand-coloured copy from the second issue of the Ulm Ptolemy, the colouring probably executed by a German monk. The deep blue sea colour is very reminiscent of the colouring of the first edition published in 1482. This map has a watermark of a mountain surmounted by a cross with intertwining snake (cf Bricquet 11832 1484/9)
