Beschreibung:

Psalterium Græcum e Codice Ms. Alexandrino.
Londini: Ex Prelo Ricardi Taylor et Socii, 1812. Folio (340 x 280 mm). printed on vellum . List of subscribers, text in Latin and Greek in two columns. Contemporary full dark blue morocco possibly by Charles Lewis (old letter laid in), covers triple ruled and panelled with elaborate scrolling floral borders in gilt, central panel double ruled in gilt and tooled in blind, spine tooled and lettered in gilt with floral and trapezoidal decorations, 5 raised bands, gilt turn-ins, yellow watered silk pastedowns and endpapers, a.e.g. Condition: offset to front enpaper from bookplates, small area of discoloration to front flyleaf, title with faint spotting to inner margin; minor shelfwear. Provenance: Sir John Hayford Thorold of Syston Park (armorial bookplate and monogram booklabel); Hon. William Henry Smith (armorial bookplate); Estelle Doheny (morocco booklabel). one of 17 copies on vellum with outstanding provenance. Edited by Henry Barber, Keeper of Printed Books at the British Museum from 1812-1827, this text is based on the ancient Codex Alexandrinus , a fifth century Septuagint and Greek New Testament presented by the Patriarch of Constantinople to King James I in 1628. The lavish binding was apparently the work of Charles Lewis as a typed note laid in at the back attests, and the Doheny Catalogue entry states that the binding is "unsigned but almost certainly by" him. Charles Lewis was the leading figure in English binding of the first years of the 19th century. The distinguished provenance of this book includes the library at Syston Park in Lincolnshire, established in 1775 by Sir John Thorold and expanded by his son Sir John Hayford Thorold, and Estelle Doheny. Darlow & Moule 4789; Reed & Johnson, pp. 315-16.
