June 24. 1843, of lacquered brass, with 5-inch dia. unscaled compass, blued-steel needle on clamp, rotating compass box with periphery silvered scale divided 0-90° in four quadrants, the compass box supporting a detachable geared vertical hoop with horizontal vernier and index, vertical silvered vernier scale divided 45-0-45° and 12 1/2-inch lg. telescope with vial and sights, on four-screw leveling base and optional (added ?) staff-mount, ht. level 9 1/2 in., in velvet-lined fitted wood case. Note: Patent No. 3,147 was granted to George D. Varney of Newburyport, Massachusetts, on June 24 1843. Copies of the patent are included with the instrument.
