Aristotle
Historia animalium [and other works]; Theophrastus. Venice: Aldus Manutius 29 January 1497
volume 3 only (of 5), Super-Chancery folio (290 x 203mm.), 464 leaves (of 467), aaαα–iiιι κκ llλλ–zzψψ &&ωω ΑΑ–ΠΠ10 ΡΡ10+1 ΣΣ ΦΦ10 ΧΧ8 ¶8, Greek text, woodcut initials and headpieces, a printed slip pasted to the foot of fol.100v supplying a line of missing text, annotations in Latin and Greek, modern half blue morocco, without blank ΧΧ8, lacking additional leaf at end of quire ΠΠ and final text leaf, occasional staining (particularly quire ffζζ and ΠΠ1_10), ΠΠ10 slightly discoloured and frayed at edges
A VOLUME FROM THE EDITIO PRINCEPS OF ARISTOTLE, containing his works on biology and a few related texts by Theophrastus. The final quire contains the spurious tenth book of Aristotle on animals; the final text leaf (here lacking) contained five lines in Latin apologising for this quire appearing in the incorrect location in the volume, rather than any of the text of Aristotle.
The printed slip pasted to fol.100v is recorded in several variants, and this one does not match any of those illustrated in Geri della Rocca de Candal, "Lost in transition: a significant correction in Aldus Manutius's Psalterion (1496/98)", The Library, 7th series, 23 (2022), 155-179, p.171, though it is suggested that the correction was produced in perhaps 15 variants, all set on one page of type. It has also been suggested that this is the first recorded use of printed correction slips.
An additional leaf, printed on one side only, was inserted at the end of quire ΠΠ to supply some missing text, but is not present in this copy. Leaf ΠΠ10 has the headline corrected in manuscript.
