The oak support has been cradled to the reverse. There is evidence of historic wood worm to the back of the panel. 1 cm oak strips have been added to the edges at a later date. The grain runs horizontally. There is a central repaired horizontal fracture with minor paint loss. Four small horizontal fractures, approximately 4cm in length, can be seen to the left hand edge and a 8cm fracture to the right hand. Significant strengthening to the paint layer has occurred down the left hand edge (2cm in width) and to the right hand (5cm wide). Investigative, partial cleaning in 2014 revealed strips of 2.7cm along the left side, and 5cm along the right side, indicating that the panel was previously reduced in size, and then converted to its current format. The rest of the paint layer is very well preserved and the paint texture and impasted details are in very good original condition. The energetic brushwork is crisp and fine details within the still life are retained. Under U-V light minor mitigation of paint thinness to the background can be detected. Chromatic subtleties and original delicate glazes are preserved. The tonal integrity is retained and would not be improved by the varnish removal. The painting presents well.
