Property from an Important New York CollectionGeorge NakashimaUnique Console Table
circa 1979macassar ebonysigned George Nakashima/Fiore and dated 198035 x 50½ x 18 in. (88.9 x 128.3 x 45.7 cm)Condition reportOverall in very good condition. This unique console table presents with beautifully figured macassar ebony with hues of rich chestnut and dark ebony tones. The wood surfaces have recently been sensitively reconditioned by a professional wood conservator to restore the beautiful original finish of the piece. The wood presents with surface irregularities and scattered minor hairlines which are inherent to the making and enhance the craftsmanship of the table. The wood surfaces throughout present with scattered light scratches and surface soiling, minor abrasions, scattered watermarks and small indentations consistent with age and gentle use. One corner of the tabletop with a very small chip to the wood measuring approximately ½ in., which appears to have been sensitively stabilized at some point in the history of the piece and only visible upon close inspection.

The present unique console table was part of a collection acquired by Victoria Fiore for her part-time work at the Nakashima Studios in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Ms. Fiore and her husband Roland learned of the furniture maker George Nakashima at a local church fair, where soon after they developed a close friendship. Ms. Fiore, a retired opera singer, spent Saturdays working as a receptionist at the Nakashima Studio between 1968 and 1988. The Fiore’s would use the earnings to purchase pieces from the studio, including chairs, cabinets, bedroom sets and the present console table.
