PRIORISTA, 1262-1492, in Italian, MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER. [Florence, ca. 1475-94] Chancery 2° (290 x 215mm). i (vellum) + 176 + i (vellum) leaves, including one blank leaf at the end: 1-13 1 2 14-15 10 , COMPLETE, modern foliation 1-175 (f.89 twice), traces of contemporary quiring in lower right corner of rectos in first half of each gathering, ca. 45 lines in one or two columns, vertical margins ruled in lead, justification approximately 270 x 145mm, with additional texts in most margins, written in two principal and several additional Italian gothic semi-cursive hands, one 4-line blue Lombard initial with red pen-flourishing on f. 1, coat of arms of the Buondelmonti family in a green laurel wreath bound in red ribbons on f.i v (thumbed, occasional foxing or stains, light dampstaining in upper and inner margins, rodent damage to upper outer corner of text block, touching text on most leaves). Original Italian blind-tooled goatskin over wooden boards, evidence of 2 clasps and 10 bosses (worn, scuffed, and wormed, without the clasps and bosses), modern tan morocco box. PROVENANCE: Teghiaio Buondelmonti: coat of arms and signature on f.i v ; unidentified library label on spine; unidentified shelfmark 'CLX.44' inside front cover; Baldassare Boncompagni, library shelfmark '125' on spine; Prince Piero Ginori Conti: bookplate inside upper cover. CONTENTS: This Priorista lists the priores and gonfalconieri of Florence, and their notaries, as well as the quarter of the city from which each came, from the founding of the Signoria in June 1282 until July-August 1492. The list of the individuals who served during each two-month term was written by a single copyist up to September-October 1475, after which the entries were added in various hands. The priori , each group of which served for two months, were the official heads of the Florentine state until the abolition of their function in 1532. Although their powers became nominal under the Medicis, for nearly two centuries they were responsible for administering the internal and external affairs of the city. The names of prominent families and individuals appear here, in a succession that reflects the viscissitudes of Florentine politics and history. Lists of the priores were important historical and administrative documents, and every prominent Florentine family would have wanted one in its archives. The present example, which belonged to the Buondelmonti family, is one of the earliest surviving copies. Although numerous Prioristi are found in the libraries of Florence, most date from the 16th or 17th centuries, and present the names of the priores by quarter or in alphabetical order, rather than according to the sequence in which they held office. Among the names listed here are Dino Compagni (April-June 1289), Dante Alighieri (June-August 1300) and Leonardo Bruni (elected chancellor on 20 December 1427). In addition to the archival value of the list of priors, this codex offers AN UNPUBLISHED AND UNSTUDIED CHRONICLE OF FLORENTINE HISTORY, in the form of comments written in the margins and at the end, where the latest entries refer to events that occured in 1494. These notes were entered in a variety of hands, including that of the principal copyist of the manuscript and one that is probably the hand of Teghiaio Buondelmonti, the first owner of the codex. As the chronicles of the Middle Ages grew from annotations in ecclesiastical calendars and Easter tables, so chronicles of Florentine history are thought to have originated in notes of historical events added to lists of the priores . This codex illustrates such a process at work. Among the events mentioned are, for example, the exile and death of Dante (ff.14v, 30), the death of Giotto (f.41v), the Black Death of 1348 (f.50v), the revolt of the Ciompi (ff.73-73v), the rise of the Medici (f.116v seq.), and events connected with the Council of Florence (ff.127v-128).
