PRIMER, Use of Sarum, in English and Latin. Thys prymer in Englyshe and in Laten is newly translated after the Laten texte . [Rouen:] Nicolas LeRoux, 1538. Three parts in one volume, 8 o (169 x 109 mm). Collation : + 8 ++ 4 A-P 8 ; A-E 8 ; A-H 8 . 236 leaves. Black letter, printed with red capitals and headings. Section-title to third part ('Pystles and Gospels') with woodcut border with initials I.G. 34 fine large woodcut illustrations. (Some corners repaired on title and first few leaves of calendar, small marginal repair on last leaf affecting one letter.) Modern blindstamped morocco, edges gilt, by Bedford. Provenance : Henry Huth (bookplate) -- Beverly Chew (bookplate, sale, Part I, 9 December 1924, lot 332) -- Estelle Doheny (bookplate; purchased from A.S.W. Rosenbach, 2 January 1943) -- donated to SMS 1943. VERY RARE EARLY EDITION, LARGELY IN ENGLISH, with Latin appearing printed only in the outer margins. Includes 'The x. commaundements,' the complete Book of Hours, the 'xv prayers of saynt brygyde,' the Penitential Psalms and Psalms of the Passion in English, several of St. Jerome's psalms, various prayers and expositions, and the Epistles and selections from the Gospels in English. These latter constitute a very early printing in English of passages, significantly different from the Tyndale and Coverdale versions. EXTREMELY RARE. Although STC 16006 mentions this as the St. Mary's, Perryville copy, it does not bear Marchant's device on the title and corresponds instead with STC 16007 (with 'Contentes' on title), which is described as "possibly earlier than STC 16006." STC 16007; 2965.4; 21790.5. See Edgar Hoskins, Horae Beatae, London, 1901, no. 139 (see also 138).
