I know how highly the Commissioners value your counsel and cooperation, and I share...their high estimate of your work and service...." [another:] "Allow me to thank you for your long and full letter about Mr. Culbertson. I am very glad to have your estimate of him and the full account that you give of his experience ad abilities. I shall want the very best man I can get for the Tariff Commission..." [another:] "It gratified me very much to learn...that you were willing to do the country the very great service of observing and investigating the operation of the eight-hour law on the railroads. I...extend to you an official but by no means formal request that you will serve in that capacity..."--ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Two typed letters signed in full to George Rublee, Syracuse and Oyster Bay, N.Y., 6 May 1915 & 27 May 1916, each one page, 4to, the second letter spotted, one sympathizing with Rublee's confirmation hearings: "You have my heartiest sympathy in your work on the Trade Commission....I think the opposition to your confirmation both silly and improper," the other asserting that "I know your only interest from beginning to end was from the public standpoint. You are one man in whom I most heartily believe, and I felt it was a great and genuine loss to the public service when you were not confirmed..."--ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN DELANO. Typed letter signed as President, to George Rublee, Washington, D.C., 12 September 1942. one page, 4to, boldly signed, on White House stationery , expressing his gratitude for a letter of support: "It is good to know that you are so fully in accord with the objectives of the address...."
