Stickney United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida. -- FILLMORE, Millard. Letter signed ("Millard Fillmore"), as President, to the Secretary of War, Washington City, 16 April 1852. 1 page, 4to . BEEFING UP THE WHITE HOUSE GUARD. Fillmore tells his Secretary of War, Charles M. Conrad: "The watchmen at the Executive Mansion have requested that you would let them have some muskets, that they may make, at least, a show of resistance when invaded. I should think small muskets with bayonets and small shot might be the best for their use." -- VAN BUREN, Martin. Autograph letter signed ("M Van Buren") to Judge Niles, Lindenwald, 7 July 1845. 1 page, 4to . Former President (and future Free Soil Party presidential candidate) Van Buren here agrees to meet with Niles and a Mr. Welles at their convenience to discuss the subjects they raised in a previous letter.
