[Presidential] Group of 11 (Mostly) Signed Presidential Documents 1. Arthur, Chester A. Signed Check New York, December 25, 1872. 2 3/4 x 7 1/2 in. (70 x 190 mm). Partially-printed Nassau Bank check, signed by twenty-first president, Chester A. Arthur, as Collector of the Port of New York, to John S. Rockwell for $40; endorsed by Rockwell on verso; cancellation slits at center. Includes an engraved view of the Washington Monument. 2. Fillmore, Millard Autograph Letter, signed Buffalo, August 31, 1858. One sheet folded to make 4 pp.; 8 x 5 1/8 in. (203 x 130 mm). Autograph letter, signed by thirteenth president, Millard Fillmore, to a Gilbert W. Wilson, concerning a financial matter; docketed on verso. Creasing from original folds. Includes an engraved portrait of Fillmore, as well as a clipped biography of him. 3. Harrison, Benjamin Printed Document, signed Washington, D.C., June 4, 1889. 3 1/4 x 8 1/2 in. (82 x 216 mm). Partially-printed document, signed by Harrison at bottom, as twenty-third president, appoinitng James E. Felch to receive subscriptions for the relief of Johnstown sufferers. Creasing from original folds. Includes an engraved portrait of Harrison, as well a color lithographic postcard view of Pennsylvania Ave. The Johnstown Flood was a disaster caused by the failure of the South Fork Dam near Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The ensuing flood resulted in more than 2,200 deaths and over $17 million in damages. 4. Hoover, Herbert Typed Letter, signed Washington, D.C, January 3, 1928. One sheet folded to make 4 pp.; 9 x 7 in. (229 x 178 mm). Typed letter on Secretary of Commerce stationery, signed by thirty-first president, Herbert Hoover, as Secretary of Commerce, to J.W. Knowland of the Oakland Tribune: "If there is/any minute of my past life that is not/being investigated I am unaware of it,/but so far the various campaigns carried/on by the opposition with these weapons/seem to have fallen fairly flat." Creased from original fold; unevenly toned. Includes photographic postcard of Hoover. 5. Kennedy, John F. Group of 2 Christmas Cards (Washington, D.C., 1958-59). 5 3/4 x 4 7/8 in. (146 x 124 mm). Two Christmas cards--one signed in a secretarial hand, the other with a printed signature--sent while serving as Senator from Massachusetts. Includes gelatin silver portrait of Kennedy, as well as a souvenir bank note. 6. McKinley, William Autograph note, signed No place, June 20, 1899. 4 1/8 x 6 1/2 in. (105 x 165 mm). Autograph note, signed by McKinley, as twenty-fifth president: "We leave your dear house regretfully/William McKinley/Ida McKinley"; likely excised from a guestbook. Both signatures probably by William, as was his custom. Includes pages excised from Munsey's Magazine about the McKinley family. 7. Roosevelt, Theodore Typed Letter Oyster Bay, New York, August 16, 1899. One sheet; 6 x 8 in. (152 x 203 mm). Typed letter on State of New York Executive Chamber stationery, to a Mr. Newcomb, appointing Henry White as a delegate to a conference on trusts; stamped with Roosevelt's signature. Creasing from original folds. Includes a printed portrait of Roosevelt. 8. Taft, William Signed Check New Haven, Connecticut, December 1, 1917. 3 1/8 x 8 3/4 in. (79 x 222 mm). Partially-printed Second National Bank of New Haven check, signed by twenty-seventh president, William Taft, to the New Haven Gas Light Co., for $3; stamped on verso; perforated at center. Includes an engraved portrait of Taft, as well as a 1908 campaign postcard. 9. Wilson, Woodrow Printed Document, signed No place, no date (ca. 1919). 5 x 7 in. (127 x 178 mm). Partially-printed card, signed by Wilson as twenty-eighth president, certifying that the affixed three-cent victory stamp is stamp no. 14 of the first sheet printed; additionally signed by Postmaster General, A(lbert).S.
