Pratchett (Sir Terry) Archive of material comprising 4 school exercise books and a sketch pad containing extensive sketches and story fragments by the teenage Pratchett and a quantity of material relating to Pratchett's interest in electronics and early programming, creasing, some wear and marking, all housed within briefcase, v.s., c.1962-64 [and possibly as late as 1971 when writing Carpet People]. ⁂ A superb archive that gives an insight into the early imaginative workings of the young author. Manuscript material by Pratchett is rare in commerce, we can trace no other similar archive. The exercise books date from around 1962, when Pratchett was aged around 13 or 14, attending the High Wycombe Technical School (now the John Hampden Grammar School). The books contain numerous references to early works by Pratchett, from an early draft of on of his earliest published short stories The Solution (published in Technical Cygnet, Wycombe Technical School Magazine, 1:10, July 1964, p.25) to drawings of figures that closely resemble Pratchett's own published illustrations for his first novel The Carpet People. Even when not directly related to later published works the drawings and fragments display Pratchett's characteristic wit and humour as well as a fascination with comics, Heath Robinson-like inventions and the creation of bizarre and intriguing fantasy worlds. The school exercise books comprise the following: 1) Exercise book for G.C.E. maths, form L6A, maths schoolwork and c. 40pp. of drawings, including a number of figures resembling Pratchett's Carpet People, one in a drawing titled On the Pelmet looking down from an encampment on a pelmet at an armchair and coffee table below, another (with parts excised) titled there- the Promised Land, many with small weapons, clubs etc., riding caterpillars and other creatures. One small patch of darkness with eyes visible titled Snargs the carnivorous creatures that feature in Carpet People. A number of science fiction-related sketches including space ship battles, astronauts and aliens. A number of leaves removed at end, 3 leaves with fragments excised. 2) Exercise book for English and maths, forms 3C and 4A, English grammatical and mathematics exercises, covers heavily sketched and doodled upon. 3) Exercise book for economic history, form 4A, schoolwork, c.70pp. of sketches and cartoon drawings and c.10pp. with fragments and a working draft of Pratchett's short story The Solution. 4) Small exercise book for German vocabulary, form L6A, German vocabulary exercises, small Pratchett-esque joke to the inside lower cover: "Do you smoke? No, but I burst into flame occasionally". 5) Sketch pad with 6ff., all detached, with drawings including 3 portrait sketches (2 of older people, 1 potentially a self-portrait of the teenage author), calligraphic writing including several practice attempts at title lettering for The Carpet People. Provenance: Acquired directly from the author.
