POTTER, BEATRIX. The Fairy Caravan. By Beatrix Heelis ("Beatrix Potter"). N.p.: Copyright of the Author, 1929. 6 color illustrations, 21 full-page black and white illustrations and 42 illustrations in the text. Small 4to, original cloth-backed lettered green paper boards, uncut, corners and edges a little bumped, cloth rubbed along edges; hinges cracked; fleece-lined partial morocco chemise and morocco-faced slipcase. COPYRIGHT EDITION, limited to 100 copies, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Potter on the front free endpaper: "For Norah Mary Edmondson from Beatrix Heelis Nov 12th 1929." Potter has designated this copy on the front pastedown, "This copy No. 21." Quinby 29; Linder, pps. 292-305 and p. 431; V & A 1703. In order to secure copyright, the author had 100 sets of sheets sent over from David McKay in America. She discarded the first eighteen pages including the Preface and Dedication and had a new set with new illustrations printed at Ambleside by George Middleton. These new sheets were bound together with the remaining American sheets into cloth-backed boards. To obtain copyright in Great Britain, Potter registered some copies at Stationers' Hall and a few copies were sold over the counter. Others were selectively presented to the people Potter felt would most appreciate many of the local Lake District references. Norah Mary Edmondson, the recipient of this copy, and the author of The Lavender Garden, was a local resident. In addition to the presentation inscription and copy designation, Potter has made ink corrections to the text on pages 87, 96, and 103. The illustrations on pages [5], [9], 11, [14], 16, and 17 appear only in this edition. Those on pages [9], 11, [14], and 17 are re-worked versions of those appearing on the same pages of the American edition. The illustrations on pages [5] and 16 are completely new.
