He was a founding member of the avant-garde movement COBRA alongside Karel Appel and Guy Debord's Situationist International with works which attempted to change people's behaviours towards art, writing, and the spaces they lived in. He studied in Paris under Fernand Léger and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. The artist experimented with spontaneous line and semi-figurative representation in paintings he called "modifications."
