POST MEDIEVAL RUSSIAN ICON Circa 18th century AD A painted provincial Russian wooden plaque depicting a religious scene with eight nimbate standing figures surrounding a nimbate seated male in ecclesiastical vestments supporting an open book in his left hand and offering a benediction with his right; the central nimbus completely gilded, the others gilded in outline; the painted area recessed into the block, two dovetailed slots to the rear. Wood, 1.1 kg, 30cm. (11 1/2"). Very fine condition, some repainting. Provenance Believed to be of Russian origin; from an old Suffolk collection. Footnotes Title of this Russian icon is "The Deisis", from the Greek word meaning prayer. The central figure is Christ enthroned as the Great High Priest. On either side of Him are the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist. Other saints are in the background.
