POST MEDIEVAL GOLD AND SILVER CROSS PENDANT WITH DIAMONDS Probably Spanish, circa 1750 AD A silver-backed articulated gold cross, probably of Spanish origin, the ends of the arms domed and set with five 'Old European Cut' diamonds with an approximate total weight of 1/2 carat; four small, irregular cut diamonds set into the floral ornamentation, with a total weight of approximately 1/10 carat; the tear-drop shaped lower segment pivots. 9.17 grams, 42 mm. (1 1/2"). Very fine condition. [No Reserve] Provenance From an important collection of Christian crosses, County Durham, UK. Footnotes The Victoria and Albert Museum has a number of Spanish crosses in this general style from the same period. The cutting of the diamonds is characteristic of this period. It is also during this time that diamonds were discovered in Brazil and imported into Europe through Spain, the first discovery of the stone outside India.
