PORTRAIT OF A MAN Seán Keating PRHA HRA HRSA (1889-1977)
Signature: signed lower right Medium: pastel on buff-coloured paper Dimensions: 43 by 33cm., 17 by 13in. Framed by the Bell Gallery, Belfast.The sitter has now been identified as Timothy J. Cronin of West End, Kiskeam, Co. Cork. He too appears in A Republican Court, seated second from right. Both men we... ere asked to sit for Keating by James J. O’Riordan, who also appears in A Republican Court, seated furthest right. Keating had wanted to paint an authentic Sinn Féin court and had approached the then Minister for Education, Seán Moylan TD, for assistance. Moylan had in turn asked his friend O’Riordan to find an appropriate setting and muster local support. Moylan and O’Riordan had fought together during the War of Independence and were both models for Keating’s Men of the South (Crawford Gallery, Cork). The other sitters in A Republican Court are Timothy Moynihan (seated left), Michael Mackie Cronin (seated centre) and Paddy and Seán Culloty (both standing), in whose house in Kiskeam, north County Cork, the scene was set.
