4to (292 x 228 mm). Engraved author portrait, 6 engraved folding maps, 14 engraved plates with the 5 ornithological plates hand-colored; but for a small stain to upper margin of one view, a very clean copy. Very handsome binding of contemporary marbled calf, spine richly tooled in gilt with red morocco lettering piece.
The first commercial voyage to the Pacific Northwest Coast of America.
First edition. Portlock sailed in 1785 with Captain Cook on his last voyage and led this three year fur-trading and mapping expedition for the King George's Sound company. His ships touched at the Falkland and Hawaiian islands (the first British voyage to do so since Cook). Landing at various points along the west coast of North America, the crew encountered indigenous people and the Russians who were trading with them, and surveyed the coast. The return journey was by way of China where they sold the furs, returning to England in 1788.
