(Some minor worming on upper gutter margin, some very pale dampstains.) Seventeenth-century Italian morocco, covers with gilt-ruled and pointelle border and central gilt ornament, spine gilt. FIRST EDITION, earliest issue (title dated 1588). In Phytognomonica , Porta develops the doctrine known as signatures, in which the external form of a plant indicates its medicinal properties. This copy without additional signatures A-C 4 at end containing the index which is found in some copies (see Mortimer 399 and note).
