New York: for the Author by Alexander Niven, 1811. 8vo (229 x 146 mm). 18 engraved plates by Rollinson and Leney after the author. Contemporary orange boards rebacked in tan calf, spine lettered in gilt. Condition: Foxed, short closed tear to one plate; rebacked, extremities worn. Provenance: Spenser Thomas (early ink signature to title); Jonathan Simmons (19th century signature to front blank in pencil). first edition . An important work, proposing a cantilever bridge across the Hudson River. It is only the second American work on bridge building. Sabin 64123; Shaw & Shoemaker 23721; Rink 23721.
