POLK, James Knox (1795-1849). Autograph receipt signed ("James K. Polf Atty for Pltff."), n.d., 18 June 1822. 1 page, oblong (2 x 6 1/8 in.), with additional records of the transaction on verso, counter-endorsed by Polk . The future President records that he has received from Sheriff Nimrod Porter the sum of [$206.98] for "the principal interest, also my Tax." On the verso, Polk has recorded the payment, which appears to be partially in settlement of a legal judgment of some type. Polk rarely wrote checks, and he remains one of the absolute rarities in this form. An autograph receipt like the present, therefore, is an acceptable alternative.
