POE, Edgar Allen (1809-1849). Autograph letter signed ("Edgar A. Poe " with flourish) to T. Houland, New York, [N.Y.], 25 May 1846. 1 page, 16mo (166 x 109mm), integral blank, trace of old album mount along left-hand edge. The poet furnishes an example of his elegant, rather mannered handwriting to an early collector: "Dr Sir It gives me great pleasure to comply with your very flattering request for an autograph..." Poe had relocated to New York in 1844, where his "The Raven" was completed. Its widespread popularity upon publication in 1845 abruptly brought him a measure of literary fame; the same year he became editor of the Broadway Journal (which ceased publication a few months prior to this note, in January 1846).
