III-IV in varying publisher's brown cloth; cloth chemises. Provenance : John T. McViccar (bookplates Vols. I-II); Arthur Swann (bookplates in vol. I; his sale Parke-Bernet, 22 March 1960, lot 339); Florence & Edward Kaye (bookplate in each volume). FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, FIRST PRINTINGS. The third volume was published separately and comprises the First Edition of The Literati , and includes Griswold's sketch of the author. The first three volumes were published in 1850; the fourth volume was not published until 1856. It became the standard edition of Poe's works for 25 years, and served as the model for nearly another quarter of a century. It is also the edition upon which Charles Baudelaire based his famous translations of Poes works into French in Histoires Extraordinaires (1856), Nouvelles Histoires Extraordinaires (1857) and Histoires Grotesques et Sérieuses (1865).
