POE, Edgar Allan. Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque . Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1840. 2 volumes, 8 o . (Occasional minor pale spotting.) Original purple muslin, printed paper spine labels (spines faded, a little wear to spine labels, covers a trifle rubbed); half green morocco folding case. Provenance : Thomas Hathaway (signature dated "1841" on each front flyleaf); A. Edward Newton (bookplates; his sale, Parke-Bernet Galleries, 29 October 1941, lot 73); Donald S. Stralem (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, one of 750 copies. Vol. II with p. 213 correctly numbered (although the "1" and "3" are slightly out of alignment with the number "2"), and with the hypen and "i" below the line on p. 219. The 4 pp. of critical notices precede the title-page of vol. II in this copy, and the flyleaves are present. Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque contains the twenty-five stories which Poe had written up to 1840, all but one having appeared previously in periodicals. Although a commercial failure when published, the work represented a milestone in Poe's career, being the culmination of his efforts to get his prose into volume form. The book collected two of Poe's most enduring stories: "Ms. Found in a Bottle" and "The Fall of the House of Usher" (its first book appearance). BAL 16133; Heartman & Canny, pp. 49-54. A FINE COPY.
