Full black morocco, sides gilt-bordered with spider-web designs and corner ornaments of onlaid gold and green depicting gold bug designs , surrounding inner panel of onlaid russet morocco with gilt strapwork arabesque design against a gilt-dot background and decorated with leafy sprays and onlaid red flower ornaments, at the center of the front cover a bas relief sculpted skull in profile of onlaid calf, matching border on rear cover, surrounding a russet panel with a gilt rope arabesque against a field of gilt star tools, at the center of which is a gilt cat head device; spine in six compartments, gilt-lettered russet lettering piece in one, and alternating gold bug and spider panels in the rest; board edges with double gilt fillet, turn-ins gilt tooled with small corner ornaments containing red onlays, doublures of black morocco, the front doublure set with AN OVAL PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF POE, gray silk endpages, edges gilt, stamp-signed on lower doublure with binders' cipher and gilt-stamped: "Designed & Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London"; fleece-lined cloth folding box. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, with the imprints of T.B. Smith and Ludwig on the copyright page, FIRST ISSUE, with the New York imprint. THE FIRST DETECTIVE STORIES. "Here... begins the detective story, with 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue,' 'Mystery of Marie Roget,' and primus inter pares , the character of the amateur detective who triumphs over the blundering police, in 'The Purloined Letter.' The earlier Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque... contains a larger number of the Poe tales of horror, which are still the artistic standard for that school, but this volume adds 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' 'The Descent into the Maelstrom,' and 'The Gold Bug'" (Grolier American ).
