PLAUTIUS, Caspar (fl. 1621)]. Nova typis transacta navigatio Novi orbis Indiae Occidentalis... nunc primum e variis scriptoribus in unum collecta... Authore... Honorio Philophono. Engraved emblematic title with figures of St. Brendan and another Benedictine, at bottom a small map of the East and West Indies, 19 engraved folding plates (numbered 1-18 and the unnumered "Owl" plate), woodcut diagrams in text, type-ornament head-pieces. Plate of Columbus with a map of the world, signed by Wolfgang Kilian (Some light darkening and minor staining, short tear into plate 10.) 17th-century limp vellum (endpapers renewed, with booksellers description pasted in). FIRST EDITION , second issue of this famous relation of the Benedictine missionaries who accompanied Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas. Although laced with miraculous accounts, beginning with the mass celebrated by St. Brendan on the back of a whale (illustrated in plate 2), the narrative is full of authentic details of Caribbean customs, flora and fauna, and agricultural products. A specimen of music is given on pp. 35-36. The author accuses the Protestant de Brys' accounts of being filled with lies, and dwells on the barbaric cruelties of the natives in support of the notion that Satan ruled the native American religions. Only the first engraving is signed, by Wolfgang Kilian (1581-1662), Augsburg master-engraver, but the others are comparable in style and were probably also executed by him. In this second issue quires )( & N were reset, the latter now including a final errata page, and a new quire containing observations on the lodestone was added. The Owl plate is here bound in preceding the errata leaf (N4), instead of at the end of the preface to the reader, as instructed in the printed placement note for the binder.
