Beschreibung:

Lot of 9 platinum prints copyrighted by Frank A. Rinehart, Omaha, NE, 1898. All signed, titled, and annotated in the negative. Subjects include a Kichai woman, Chief Goes to War, Touch the Cloud, Spies on the Enemy, and Thunder Cloud. A rear view image captioned "Omaha Dance Bonnet & Scalp Lock" presents the sitter seated in a metal chair, displaying a variation of the traditional scalp lock hairstyle adorned with feathers. Though the long plait of hair is present at the crown, the rest of the head remains unshorn. Dimensions vary, ranging from 6.75 x 9.75 in. to 8 x 10 in. A commercial portrait photographer from Omaha, NE, Rinehart was commissioned by the government to photograph the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition, held there in 1898. Many nineteenth century expositions exhibited Native Americans, and Rinehart likely captured these striking portraits during his tenure as official photographer of the event. Condition: Many with wear or loss at edges and corners.
